1. Introduction to SEO
Search engine optimisation (SEO) is basically a way to optimise your website with an aim to get good results from search engines with relevant keywords. In this article I will try to help by providing advice and techniques to help achieve the results you would want from your search engine optimisation campaign and I am open to any comments

2.Keywords
Your chosen keywords are one of the most important areas. Try writing a list of potential keywords research your competitors to see what they have used, do searches for your chosen keywords and see how many results are returned, Some less specific keywords will get you a lot of hits if successful, but can be very hard to get top results, for example “web design”, but if you work on say “web design Sheffield” it will be much easier to get some top results and just by adding the word “Sheffield” you are still working on “web design”, you could also work on say “content management systems”, “bespoke software”, “software company” and try to cover the services you offer. Once you have your chosen keywords you should now start working on your content.

3. Techniques
Now you have your keywords, write some clear content, don’t repeat your keywords over and over, search engines pick this up and know you are trying to cheat, you need to write content that is readable to people and make sense, but still try to add your keywords when you can without messing up your text. Sometimes make your keywords bold, or if they are within a title, put them into H1 Tags, have links to relevant pages on your site by clicking some of your keywords within your text, always use alt tags for any images, if you can add a keyword to your image alt tag then do it.

4. Your useful website
Make your site as useful as you can, offer advice, reviews, information, search engines love to see sites with lots of information, also if you can try to keep your site updated regularly this can also help, have an introduction of some of your services on your home page (do not use the exact same text from one page to another, this can cause search engines to lower your positions). Write articles on your site relating to your services or products, offer a way for visitors to post comments (don’t allow them to have an outbound link), ask that any visitors help by adding a link to your articles. Offer RSS for your articles, this way visitors can keep up to date with any new information added (search engines also like to see this too), if your site gets some visitors and comments, maybe consider having a forum on your site for your visitors, as they will generate more content for you and keep your site interesting.

5. Page Rank
You can check your page rank using googles toolbar, a page rank is a way Google basically knows how important your site is, the more inbound links you have the higher your rank and the higher your rank the better your websites keywords will do in search engine results.

6. Building inbound links
Getting inbound links is probably where you can spend most of your time, contacting other sites that are relevant to yours asking for a link (if you can do this one way that’s even better, meaning if you can just get them to link to you without you having to link to there site), if you have some useful content it may be easier to get some inbound links, try to get more pointing to your home page, but it is also good to have inbound links to other parts of your web site too. Try finding forums relating to your services, are there any people out there that have questions on your services? If this is something you can help with, you should sign up to a few sites that will allow you to respond to forum threads to help users, with a little link back to your site.

7. Social networking sites
Another way to get some inbound links, create some social networking accounts for example, twitter and face book, use twitter to keep people posted on updates for your site (with links) and face book to provide a profile about your company (with links back to your site). This isn’t only to get inbound links but it’s a way to help your visitors keep updated and keep you in touch with any potential clients

8. Publish your site
If your site is new, don’t forget to publish it, go to some search engines and find how to do this, you normally will just need to send them your web address. If you have some inbound links, your site will eventually be crawled by search engines anyway.

9. Keep search engines updated. As and when you make adjustments to your site, don’t forget to update your social networking sites, your RSS and also I would suggest adding your url to http://pingdevice.com/ This lets search engines know you have made an adjustment and should help get your updates showing quicker than waiting for it to be crawled (another reason having a lot of inbound links can help, is your site will be crawled more regularly)

10. Tools
I will be adding some tools here to help select your keywords and also to help check the density of your keywords, I will try to add anything that will be useful (any suggestions, please email me)
