I have read so many articles on how to get links back to your website and thought I would write up my own version on what methods I use and will add more details to my blog as and when I find any more useful information.
Having back links to your web site help Google determine how important your site is, if you have 1000s of people linking to your site, Google will take these as votes of approval, try to only deal with relevant links back to your site, as search engines also read the content of the site linking to yours.
I would say the most important area of SEO is your sites content (when initially designing your website make sure its SEO friendly, design is easy to navigate and full of useful and helpful content), and back links is 2nd, following the below information can help cover both areas.
First of all, I would say the best back links are the ones that you naturally get, this could be from someone visiting your website, finding something really helpful (factsheet, clever calculator etc...) and posting on their blog, social network or website a link to your content.
I say this is the best way, as you will build up links without having to constantly request links back, and the more useful information you have on your website, the more chance and more often you will receive natural back links... and the extra bonus is you are creating SEO rich content full of useful information that Google also love, and will in return push you up the results.
Two birds with one stone here, adding content to your website and gaining links back.
Other than this approach, I would also suggest getting yourself a good reputation online, visit yahoo answers or relevant forums signup and start helping members with questions that are relevant to your business with a link back to your site
This second approach would also benefit from having some useful information on your site, as this way, you will gain links from answering a question, people will visit your site from your answer, find something useful on your site and in return link back to your site.
So to summaries:
1. Make use you design your website so its SEO friendly, easy to navigate
2. Write some helpful factsheets or develop any useful tools on your site (the more GOOD content the better) and make sure these pages are SEO friendly too
3. Signup to Yahoo answers, local forums and relevant forums, become a helpful member helping other members with their questions and adding a link back to your site where appropriate.
4. Keep repeating these and you will build up your websites content and people finding your content will hopefully link back to your site
Thank you for reading, I hope you find this information helpful, I will update any future findings in future posts
